Lake Hawea is a dream location for the adventurous who like to relax and chill out after a day out fishing, biking or tramping. It is a small township, only a 15 minute scenic drive from Wanaka, on the road to Makarora and the West Coast.
The Lake provides a stunning location in which to swim, kite surf, boat or laze about on the beach. To relish the view, take to the sky and enjoy a vigorous climb up one of the mountains where you will be rewarded with unforgettable views of some of the most astounding scenery New Zealand has to offer. Enjoy a picnic on the endless stretch of beach looking into the mesmerising colour of the lake - straight out of the Elysium fields, which will leave you in awe.
Lake Hawea has its own convenience store, café and restaurants so you don’t have to venture too far if you are worn out from your days adventure! There is a walking/biking track from Lake Hawea to the Hawea Flat Primary School, which is perfect for those active families that don’t feel the need to jump in the car every day.
